MY LEARNING EXPERIENCES

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

I have a vivid memory of being taught French in fifth grade. I have retained most of the language today. I believe it was an experimental class. It was taught by a very energetic young French teacher who may have been a graduate student doing a practicum. The learning method was all verbal, through dialog and repetition. It was both a skill as well as learning information, a foreign language. It might have been introduced to understand if young students could learn another language verbally. I remember the teacher made it fun to learn so I think that’s why it stayed with me. This learning scenario is an example of a behaviorism.

HIGH SCHOOL

I remember learning in high school how to create a budget to live on as an adult. I’m not sure what class it was, probably math. I learned by doing, by creating a realistic budget to live on. I was learning to use math for a real-life responsibility. Math was not my strength in high school, but I remember being extremely interested in learning how to use it in this way. This is an example of constructivism learning theory.

PROFESSIONAL

I was hired by my current employer to update bibliographic information used to produce a well-known library directory of online publications using Access, a referential database. The problem was, neither I nor our IT professional knew how to use Access. I learned by teaching myself, by working in the database through trial and error, and by classes offered at computer stores (which, I believe went out of business a long time ago). I began to realize I knew more than the instructors. I had to know the skill of using an Access database to perform my job.
